چکیده

Nonparametric algorithm for the instantaneous frequency (IF) estimation, by using the Wigner distribution (WD) with an adaptive window length, is considered in the paper. This algorithm produces a bias-to-variance trade-o7 close to optimal, meaning almost minimal mean squared error (MSE) of the estimation. Thus, the adaptive window length is characterized by a small bias at the considered instant. Then, according to the WD concentration property, the IF estimate can be assumed as a linear function within this window. Instead of nonparametric IF estimation in other points within this interval the linear IF interpolation can be performed. Length of the interpolation segment is determined based on the adaptive window length. It is done in such a way to produce a trade-o7 between the interpolation caused error and calculational complexity. This modi;cation can produce a signi;cant calculation savings, without increasing the overall MSE. Theoretical analysis has been con;rmed on numerical examples and statistical study with four synthetic signals. The approach presented here can be generalized in a straightforward manner to nonlinear interpolations and higher order time-frequency representations. ? 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Overview of Signal Instantaneous Frequency Estimation Methods

This paper gives an overview of existing instantaneous frequency (IF) estimation methods divided into several major categories. One of the first IF estimation approaches was based on the spectrogram, the resolution of which is highly window size dependant. In order to improve the IF estimation accuracy, the iterative method was proposed, such that each iteration gives more accurate estimation o...

Cross-term Suppression in Wigner Distribution

Wigner Distribution, one of many methods to compute time frequency representation, satisfies large number of mathematical properties and gives optimal energy concentration in time frequency plane. However, Wigner distribution suffers from severe cross-term interference problem, which limits its scope for practical applications. Different modified versions of Wigner distribution have been develo...

Use of the cross Wigner-Ville distribution for estimation of instantaneous frequency

This correspondence presents an iterative instantaneous frequency (IF) estimation scheme in which successive IF estimates are obtained from the peak of the cross Wigner-Ville distribution (XWVD) using a reference signal synthesized from an initial IF estimate. Theoretical and practical aspects of performance are discussed, and compared with other methods.

Pathologies cardiac discrimination using the Fast Fourir Transform (FFT) The short time Fourier transforms (STFT) and the Wigner distribution (WD)

This paper is concerned with a synthesis study of the fast Fourier transform (FFT), the short time Fourier transform (STFT and the Wigner distribution (WD) in analysing the phonocardiogram signal (PCG) or heart cardiac sounds.     The FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) can provide a basic understanding of the frequency contents of the heart sounds. The STFT is obtained by calculating the Fourier tran...

Time-frequency distributions with complex argument

—A distribution highly concentrated along the group delay or the instantaneous frequency (IF) is presented. It has been defined by introducing signal with a complex argument in time–frequency (TF) analysis. Realization of a signal with complex argument, using signal with a real argument, is described. The reduced interference realization of the complex argument distribution, in the case of mult...
